Under the National Programme for Control of Blindness, the different activities that are in place include School Eye Screening programme for school children with provision of Free spectacles to those with refractive error; Cataract screening programme with provision of Free Cataract surgeries in either the government hospitals or through empanelled NGOs in the private set up for which the NGO partner is reimbursed the operation cost by the government.
As a district initiative a fortnightly Diabetes screening cum Diabetic Retinopathy screening is done at the District Hospital in Alipurduar. Another venture is the monthly screening of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in pre-term or low birth weight new borns, who are usually admitted in the SNCUs.
